The Message of a King

In September of 2017, I began reading and studying this book with close interest. It is an elaborate walkthrough of all 50 of the demands spoken by Jesus. Verbatim from His spoken words within the English translation of Scripture, the book presents an up-close view of what Jesus said while He was present with His followers during His ministry. It is really a commentary from John Piper that offers his educated opinion about what it means to follow Jesus and fulfill written instructions to those who love Him.

All 50 demands are together a way to express what it is that Jesus requires of all that He has authority over. It is a well-written perspective concerning the meaning of what Jesus intended to say to His followers both then and now. Jesus demonstrated specific interest in the who, what, where, when, how, and why of God’s work was demonstrated in Him to those He loved and who were given to Him. From the individual to the church, the people of Israel, and the nations that formed, Jesus had presented Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that eternal rest is found in Him. That those who love Him will keep his commandments or instructions (John 14:15).

It is over 3-years later, I have come to complete the careful and meticulous read-through of this text. I have spent many hours checking verses and researching specific biblical words in use from root languages. I compared many verses and found both joy and distress in their message. To complete the book is an arduous journey that takes time and space to absorb or gather its relevance. To ruminate on what Jesus said, what He meant, and how His words were actionable—carried out by His apostles, followers, and believers today to fulfill what He specified. Not as a set of hard fast rules of conduct and performance, but of guidance and instructions that were and are an expression of His love. A love of such depth and magnitude that is humanly impossible to express.

This blog has numerous posts that reference back to what was written and explained in this book. More importantly, about what it was that Jesus spoke about in Scripture. Returning to any one topic is beyond the scope of a single post, but it all must come down to love. Everything we do and want to do stems from the love we have for Him and for what He has done. This book is time well-spent, even if it is a casual read-through, unlike what I did. The subject matter provides for a long time reference of Piper’s work to get one man’s accurate and Scriptural perspective on what Jesus said.

Book Review

This is a book flip-through to get a look at the general depth and scope of the text. It is not an academic book. It is intended for anyone serious about knowing what Jesus said. About what it is to love Him by doing what He says.

The Path of Most Resistance

In the New Testament, we read about how becoming a friend of the world puts God’s people at enmity with Him (James 4:4). To recognize and want all the same values, traditions, interests, and core beliefs as secular society, some individuals or churches come into opposition of Christ. Similarly, as there were numerous false deities in the ancient Near East, the people of nations surrounding Israel engaged in idol worship where it was forbidden to place anything above the value and supremacy of God. Yet, as the major prophets write about in explicit detail, that is exactly what God’s people did.

Like other nations, Israel wanted to serve wood and stone, or objects made with their own hands to worship and serve. Even worse, they participated in child sacrifices and served false gods to gain favor. Inevitable and growing destructive behaviors were carried out among the pagan nations to have a severely consequential influence on Israel. As we read in Ezekiel 20:32, we come to understand that the people of Israel wanted to be like other nations to form their own religious worldview and worship creation, or false deities rather than their Creator.

Today, modern Christians look upon the systems and objects of desire formed by modern society, and we want the same for ourselves. Too often, not just in an incidental, or healthy way, but as a preeminently common value above Yahweh. To have a bearing on how we are educated, entertained, governed, and how we are made prosperous and secure through economic beliefs and policies. All of which we adopt for ourselves while having separate priorities apart from Christ (Isaiah 53:6). As “being in the world yet not of the world” does not bear practical meaning to affect life choices, use of time, money, attention, behaviors, thinking, etc. All Christians are called to place Christ as LORD over everything and anything.

The full integration of secular society and the local church caters to its guests, members, and the public with initiatives, programs, or appeal with well-developed marketing messages absent the gospel or hardships that accompany abundant and eternal life in Christ. Compromise against biblical principles of service, living, and morality becomes inevitable. A church given to social appeal dilutes its purpose and mission as it caters to the “what’s in it for me” mindset. If an individual or group’s lifestyle, “self-truth,” or preferences cannot be accommodated, then secular churches lapse, temporarily or otherwise, into concession in its desire to serve a false “god.” A false god honored by how it operates. Moreover, social influences and pressures upon an individual can have a significant bearing on a Christian that does not honor Christ as Lord. A person is then inevitably subjected to the honor required of what seems right at best (Prov 14:12).

It is necessary to love others and steward creation, but love for Yahweh is most urgent.

Words Cherished & Spoken

What would it look like if every command that Jesus spoke was isolated and identified in Scripture among their separate and individual verses? To get at Jesus’s words cherished and spoken in this way for a narrower and more specific view of what He requires. That is, mostly to understand with clarity what He has said and to desire Him in a better way. Yet also to set a center point in which biblical context is read and understood. That is what this table of verses below does.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. ” – Jesus

Here are the words as spoken during His time here with us. With correlated verse references for ease and convenience of lookup and comparison. The table gives you the ability to sort and filter for search and retrieval.

When we are able to recognize what He has said, we begin to see a pattern. A pattern of love and obedience that brings us closer to Him. Wherefrom the beginning of our eternity in the Kingdom of God, it will become proclaimed for His glory. He was and is worthy of all honor and blessings.

Once we read and understand what He has said in these New Testament passages, we can further recognize meaningful implications and how they relate to what it is we are doing to fill them. As an effort to demonstrate that we are interested in serving Christ while honoring His word. To satisfy what He wants of us. With specificity, we are then, in turn, able to identify and track what it is we have done to demonstrate our love for Him. Again, with joy, to honor what He wants of us.

Trust & Follow

“One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”

– Mark 10:21 KJV

This is what it means to be justified before God. What it takes to become perfection by God’s standard and to obtain eternal life. Spoken plainly, Jesus has said that there are these specifics in Mark 10:21 above that require attention.

Its context is about when a wealthy man approached Jesus to ask him about how to inherit eternal life. While in his view he kept the commandments and obeyed the Mosaic law on one level, he actually was not perfect. To which Jesus said, “You lack one thing”.

The “ONE thing” the moral and wealthy man heard Jesus say is outlined and parsed here:

(a.) Sell all you have
(b.) Give to the poor
(c.) Take up your cross
(d.) Come to Him
(e.) Follow Him

So we can infer, that as we abide by what God morally requires, these are the specifics about what you must have to inherit eternal life. While on the outside the wealthy man’s behaviors honored God’s moral law, that wasn’t the full condition of his heart. So the answer Jesus gave him was explicit about what is necessary to inherit eternal life. Which is above and beyond moral and righteous conduct. That in this way, Jesus directly and clearly got to the heart of the wealthy man’s question.

On its face, Jesus describes in total more than one thing as required (a, b, c, d, and e above). Where taken together, he must transfer all that he is and all that he has to all that Jesus is. Really, the “One Thing” as compared to his wealth and status. Because of His wealth, Jesus was to reign in his heart over his wealth and anything else.

Even with a high degree of personal righteousness, this is the only way to God’s kingdom. It wasn’t that this outward righteousness isn’t correct and necessary, but it just wasn’t enough because we are not perfect without Christ. It wasn’t possible to achieve perfection on his own, either internally of the heart and externally from behaviors, performance or obedience.

To further see what happens after we trust and follow Christ, there are two historical and scriptural principles to consider. Principles that reinforce Jesus’s words about our transformation as we set aside everything else and follow Him. That over time, and as it is written, we are His workmanship (Eph 2:10 KJV).

A. Trust Him – IMPUTATION | We are given Christ’s Righteousness.
Through Jesus and His life, death, and resurrection, God has accepted His sacrificial atonement for those who would trust and follow Him. Where all our sins are canceled and God doesn’t see us as sinful or imperfect anymore. Jesus himself is the perfection of those who trust and follow Him.

B. Follow Him – SHEMA | Love the LORD and love others as yourself.
The presence and power of Christ and the Holy Spirit within you will transform you. When we trust and follow Him. That love will develop within you toward perfection until fully completed in heaven (Mk 12:37-40).

Take Up Your Cross

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” – Matt 16:24-25

Here is what it means to follow Jesus. It is to join Him in what He came to do as it is to gather with Him (Lk 11:23). That is, to gather followers for the glory of his Father. Furthermore, following the LORD Yeshua also means that those who are His share in his suffering. He knew that His pain would also spill over onto those who follow Him (Jn 15:20).

As John Piper puts it, His followers will also experience ruptures in their relationships with people, possessions, and vocation. There will be a loss of friends and family, setting aside treasure, objects, and belongings. And, at times, an abandonment of career pursuits and what others view as worldly aspirations. It is the overall decrease of self-interest in exchange for His interests and what He came to do.

Come to Me

Those who God the Father has given to Jesus will become His. A chosen people who are given faith to believe will hear His voice and will come to Him. From a state of spiritual death, His people are called by his power and irresistible grace. To glorify Him and to enjoy Him forever. Belief and repentance are granted as a gift to those who are His.

People are called to the Lord by the Father. Out of a state of slavery and spiritual death, they are called. People are recipients of God’s power to bring people to life spiritually to draw them to Him. As a people given to the Lord Jesus as His possession.

Furthermore, wherefrom repentance is given to those who believe and are drawn to Him; ultimately, they see Jesus as having a supreme value above all things.

So once called, Jesus becomes our treasure. A holy treasure as we enter the narrow gate and walk a hard way of life. A hard way of life because, in this world, it is very difficult to value Jesus above all things (Matt 5:29-30).

Jesus demands that we come to Him. It is to accept Him and God’s gift of repentance to enjoy Jesus and God the Father above all for our eternal security. For His glory and the Father’s good pleasure.

Light Unto My Feet

There was a recent posting on a familiar blog site about how to know God’s will. It was in reference to George Mueller’s outline about how to understand, discern, or follow God’s will. In faith, once it is understood, recognized, or accepted.

How to know God’s will for you:

1. I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it has no will of its own in regard to a given matter. Nine-tenths of the trouble with people is just here. Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord’s Will, whatever it may be. When one is truly in this state, it is usually but a little way to the knowledge of what His will is.

2. Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or simple impression. If so, I make myself liable to great delusions.

3. I seek the Will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions also. If the Holy Ghost guides us at all, He will do it according to the Scriptures and never contrary to them.

4. Next I take into account providential circumstances. These often plainly indicate God’s Will in connection with His Word and Spirit.

5. I ask God in prayer to reveal His Will to me aright.

6. Thus, through prayer to God, the study of the Word, and reflection, I come to a deliberate judgment according to the best of my ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and continues so after two or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly. In trivial matters, and in transactions involving most important issues, I have found this method always effective.

Point of No Return

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.

If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess.

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Dt 30:15–20).

Set before you is life and good, death and evil.

Concentric Effort

While viewing session 2 of David Platt’s lessons on “Follow Me” (www.followmebook.org), I kept various notes on a 3×5 index card. To follow along and pay careful attention. Play, rewind, pause, replay, and so on. I have to go through all of these and keep reading his book. And with urgency, because I have to know.

Here are some of the notes that were etched on this card, with Christ the center of a concentric circle that illustrates the biblical framework of a follower.

First and foremost, confessing Christ changes everything about us.

THOUGHTS
ROM 12:1; And to take captive every thought to the obedience of Christ.

DESIRES
To know God deeply is to love God wholeheartedly. This one is supreme in meaning because I am haunted by Matt 7:23.

WILL
Our will is grounded on our thoughts and desires. We act and live as Jesus does based on what we believe.

RELATIONSHIPS
Sharing and fellowship to encourage and renew.

PURPOSE
John 15:5; Bear Fruit.
So how do we know one is a follower?

1.) To abide in Christ, let his words remain in me.
His words. God’s word cleanses us.

2.) To remain in his love, by doing what he says.
God’s words empower us.
God’s words compel us.
God’s words satisfy us.
God’s words bring joy, and our joy becomes complete.

Proclaim His words no matter how much it costs us.

This brings peace.
